China-Made Mercedes-Benz GLE Arrives with Wheelbase Surpassing BMW X5 – Can It Disrupt the Luxury SUV Market?

In the luxury SUV market, Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 have long been regarded as neck-and-neck rivals. However, in recent years, the imported Mercedes-Benz GLE has been somewhat shunned by high-end consumers due to its sky-high pricing. By contrast, the BMW X5 successfully grabbed widespread market attention last year, thanks solely to its strong sales performance of 87,000 units. Faced with this situation, Mercedes is clearly unwilling to sit idle – the launch of the China-made Mercedes-Benz GLE is imminent.
To cater to domestic consumers' preference for large-sized SUVs, the China-made Mercedes-Benz GLE has undergone significant adjustments to its vehicle dimensions. Reportedly, the China-made model measures 5,044mm in length and extends to 3,115mm in wheelbase – representing increases of 117mm and 120mm respectively compared to the imported version. This change will undoubtedly enhance interior space, particularly comfort for rear-seat passengers.
Inside the cabin, the China-made Mercedes-Benz GLE is expected to retain Mercedes-Benz’s latest yacht-inspired design language, offering a spacious and comfortable five-seat configuration. Meanwhile, the vehicle will be equipped with Mercedes’ newest infotainment system and support L2+ level advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), further enhancing both driving convenience and safety.
